ELIXIRION - Position description

DC01-Project Title: Integrated Terrestrial Networks (TNs) and Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) for ubiquitous and reliable healthcare access.

Given that 90% of Earth’s surface has no mobile coverage, as it lacks TN infrastructure, the data generated by Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) monitoring devices (e.g., wearables) in those areas, can only rely on NTN means, such as Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), to be sent to remote healthcare centers for processing. Such a solution, apart from being the only possibility for dispatching essential medical data to healthcare providers, it can even result in lower End-to-End (E2E) latencies compared with the TN- fiber-only infrastructure. However, currently there is no framework for the seamless integration of large-scale TN/NTNs consisting of LEO satellites, HAPS, and UAVs that deals with their coordination and resource management so as to meet the challenging Healthcare 4.0 service requirements.


Doctoral Candidate’s (DC) role: The DC will provide a general framework for the distributed self-organization and resource optimization of wide-scale aerial/space NTNs comprising LEO satellites, HAPS, and UAVs that operate concurrently and are responsible to convey a large volume of IoMT generated data. The DC’s goal is to provide dynamic routing algorithms that deal with the complexity and the dynamicity of mesh topology, caused by node mobility. To that end, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) data-driven optimization will be leveraged together with offline data from analytical models when the collection of a large amount of online data is prohibitive. In addition, NTN nodes will be also equipped with edge computing capabilities for alleviating the workload of TN edge nodes or in cases that the TN infrastructure is absent. Based on the above, up to 99.99999% reliability and 100% coverage are targeted.

Doctoral Candidate (DC) is recruited under a Type A employment contract. The living allowance is a gross amount, including compulsory deductions under national law, such as employer and employee social security contributions and direct taxes. Moreover, the DC will be eligible to receive mobility allowance and family allowance (if applicable) that could also be subject to taxation.
