DC04-Project Title: Zero-touch inter-node edge orchestration and online 6G-ready service monitoring for low latency healthcare applications.
Host institution: NEARBY COMPUTING SL, Spain
Although both open source and commercial products, e.g., Open Source Management and Orchestration (OSM), Cloudify and Netcracker, have been built to provide 5G/6G networks with orchestration capabilities, they focus on the network resources’ and data centers’ orchestration, without explicitly taking into account the challenges of the edge: i.e., i) limited resources; ii) the need for orchestrating different functions (both physical and virtual) and different devices (e.g., sensors, cameras); and iii) the possibility of having multiple administrative domains and underlying infrastructures (e.g., Virtual Machines (VMs) or containers). In addition, even though preliminary efforts focus on the incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deep Machine Learning (ML) in the network orchestration and, lately, even in a distributed manner, the causality/reasoning for the predictions (that would enable operators to understand in depth the network performance) remains an open challenge.
Doctoral Candidate’s (DC) role: The DC will provide complete End-to-End (E2E) network and service orchestration solutions, focusing on the network edge and its challenges. The proposed solutions will be applicable in 6G infrastructures, composed of heterogeneous components, i.e., from virtual network functions to Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) resources and hardware devices, spanning across multiple domains with various underlying technologies (i.e., Openstack and K8s). To be compliant with the 6G nature and its foreseen inherent intelligence, the proposed orchestration solutions will leverage robust and trustworthy Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods. The adoption of the proposed orchestration solutions is expected to contribute towards: i) optimized network and application service placement of down to sub-ms latency and ii) 99.99999% service continuity through effective XAI-enabled proactive service migrations.
